One Laptop For Me (Oh, and Per Child Too)

Despite some very reasonable arguments on why this is not a very good use of money and international effort, I’m still a big fan of the whole One Laptop Per Child project. Mostly because I’d like to get my hands on the laptop in question, as it seems like a neat little toy. Starting on Monday, for a limited time, you can through the Give One Get One program. You give $400, you get one laptop, and one laptop is donated to a needy child somewhere (You also get a $200 tax deduction for the value of the donated laptop). It sounded a little steep, but then I was all set to buy an iPhone which does a less for a lot more.

Today I got an email reminder that it starts on Monday. Plus, T-Mobile is giving away a complimentary year of unlimited HotSpot usage (ie: that wireless internet thing you get use at Starbucks). That a $360 value (figure about $400+ when taxes are included)!

Now what started as a slightly steep charity moves becomes a sweet deal. Essentially you are signing up for 1 year of HotSpot, getting a free children’s laptop, donating a free children’s laptop, AND getting a $200 tax deduction to boot. It’s a steal!
